Cough, what is it?
It's a physiological, defensive reflex of the body that helps keep the airways free of irritants or obstructive substances to ensure proper and effective breathing. It can be dry or oily, also called productive, the latter characterized by the presence of mucus.
Some natural remedies can provide relief from coughs or upper airway inflammation.
Plantain is particularly useful in treating throat and airway disorders thanks to its mucilage and tannin content, which protect the respiratory mucosa. It also has emollient, sedative, astringent, and expectorant properties.
It is therefore often included in syrups, for example, to calm coughs and dissolve phlegm; the mucilage contributes to the soothing effect by layering on the mucous membranes, thus protecting them from further aggression.
Drosera is a plant with antispasmodic, bronchosedative, antiseptic, decongestant, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties. Its cough-relieving effect is due in particular to sundew , a calming substance that acts on the smooth muscles of the bronchi.
Upper airway irritation can be caused by external agents such as dust, cigarette smoke, gases, cold, humid climates, or by viral or bacterial infections.
You can find syrups made from plantain and sundew at your local pharmacy. Ask your pharmacist for advice on how to use them correctly.
